Freezer Not Freezing? Causes and What to Check

Ice cream soft, frost on the back wall, or the fridge warm too? Here is what you can check safely and what each symptom usually means.

Refrigerator and freezer diagnostic visit: $119, credited toward an approved repair. Text a photo of the model tag and we reply within 15 minutes during business hours.

Safe checks to do first

These take a few minutes. Do not remove panels or touch wiring: refrigerators carry line voltage and some use flammable refrigerant.

01

Confirm the setting

The freezer should be set to 0°F (−18°C). An appliance thermometer in a glass of water or between packages gives a more honest reading than the display.

02

Check the door and gasket

A drawer that does not close fully or a torn gasket lets in humid air, which turns into frost and warm spots.

03

Do not overload the freezer

Packages pressed against the back wall can block the air coming off the evaporator coil.

04

Clean the condenser coils

Unplug the unit, then vacuum the coils under the front grille or on the back. Dusty coils reduce cooling on hot Florida days.

What the symptoms usually point to

These are likely causes, not a diagnosis. The same symptom can have different causes, and testing is what tells them apart.

What you seeUsually points to
Thick frost on the back wall, freezer warming upA defrost failure: heater, defrost thermostat or thermistor, or the control.
Freezer and fridge both warm, compressor runningA sealed-system problem such as a refrigerant leak or a weak compressor.
Freezer warm, no fan sound insideThe evaporator fan motor.
Clicking, compressor will not startThe compressor start components or the compressor.
Freezer too cold, fridge too warmAirflow or a damper problem between the sections.

A full freezer holds temperature longer than an empty one, so do not empty it until you know what is wrong.

When to call a technician

If the setting and door are fine and the freezer is still not holding 0°F after a day, the cause is usually inside the cooling system. A diagnostic visit finds which part failed and gives you the cost before any work.

Your technician’s qualifications

Our technician understands both sides of a modern appliance: the cooling or mechanical system and the electronics that control it. Problems are found by testing, not by swapping parts until something helps.

  • A.S. Applied Electronics Technology-HVAC

Plus an HVAC diploma, Southern Technical College, 2025: electrical systems, electronics, controls and refrigeration.

  • EPA Section 608 Universal Technician Certification

Federal certification required to handle refrigerant (ESCO Institute).

  • HC/HFO Technician Certification

For hydrocarbon and HFO refrigerants such as R-600a, used in many modern refrigerators and wine coolers (Mainstream Engineering Corporation).

  • Complex refrigeration and electronics diagnostics

About two and a half years of hands-on appliance repair and two and a half years training other technicians, focused on cooling systems, electronics and high-end appliances.

Quick answers

Is my food safe while I wait?

Keep the doors closed as much as possible. According to USDA guidance, a closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours, and a full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours (about 24 hours if it is half full). Frozen food that still has ice crystals or is at 40°F or below can be refrozen.

Can I fix frost build-up myself?

A full manual defrost (unplugged for 24 hours, doors open, towels down) can bring cooling back for a while. If the frost returns, the automatic defrost system has failed and needs repair.

How much is a diagnostic visit?

$119 for refrigerators, freezers, wine coolers and built-in refrigeration, credited toward an approved repair of the same appliance. If you decide not to approve the repair, the diagnostic fee is still due. No additional travel fee applies within our St. Petersburg and Tampa service areas.

Which areas do you serve?
