Refrigerator Not Cooling? What to Check Before You Call

Five safe checks you can do yourself, what each symptom usually points to, and when it is time for a technician. Written by our EPA 608 certified refrigeration technician.

Refrigerator diagnostic visit: $119, credited toward an approved repair. Text a photo of the model tag and we reply within 15 minutes during business hours.

Five safe checks to do first

These take a few minutes and need no tools beyond a vacuum. Do not remove panels or touch wiring: refrigerators carry line voltage and some use flammable refrigerant.

01

Check the temperature setting

Controls sometimes get bumped while loading groceries. The fresh-food section should be set to 37°F (about 3°C) and the freezer to 0°F (−18°C). After a change, give it up to 24 hours to settle.

02

Make sure the doors close and seal

A door held open by a shelf, a drawer or an uneven floor lets warm air in all day. Close the door on a sheet of paper: if it slides out easily, the gasket may not be sealing at that spot.

03

Clear the vents inside

Cold air reaches the fresh-food section through vents, usually near the top or back. Boxes pushed against them can leave the fridge warm while the freezer stays cold.

04

Clean the condenser coils

Dust on the condenser coils (under the front grille or on the back) makes the compressor work harder and cool less. Unplug the refrigerator first, then vacuum the coils with a brush attachment.

05

Listen for the fans

With the door closed, you should hear the condenser fan near the compressor and, in most models, the evaporator fan inside the freezer. Silence from either one while the compressor runs is a clue worth telling the technician.

What the symptoms usually point to

If the checks above did not help, the pattern of the problem narrows down the cause. These are likely causes, not a diagnosis: the same symptom can have different causes, and testing is what tells them apart.

What you seeUsually points to
Freezer is cold, fresh-food section is warmAirflow between the sections: a frozen evaporator coil from a defrost problem, an evaporator fan that stopped, or a stuck damper.
Both sections warm, compressor running constantlyA sealed-system problem, such as a refrigerant leak or a weak compressor, or a condenser that cannot shed heat.
Clicking every few minutes, compressor will not startThe compressor start components or the compressor itself.
Frost or ice building up on the back wall of the freezerA defrost system failure: heater, sensor, thermostat or control.
Display errors, lights on but no coolingThe control board or a sensor. Many board faults can be repaired at component level.
Cooling comes and goes, worse on hot daysA dirty condenser, a failing condenser fan or a refrigerant charge problem.

Built-in units such as Sub-Zero, Thermador, Viking and Miele follow the same physics but are built differently. See high-end appliance repair.

“Just add refrigerant” is not a repair

A refrigerator does not use up its refrigerant. If the charge is low, there is a leak. Topping it off may bring the cooling back for a while, but the refrigerant keeps escaping and the problem returns.

We don’t offer top-offs. We find the leak, repair it, evacuate the system and charge it by weight to the manufacturer’s specification. If a leak repair doesn’t make sense for your refrigerator, we tell you before any work begins.

Your technician’s qualifications

Our technician understands both sides of a modern appliance: the cooling or mechanical system and the electronics that control it. Problems are found by testing, not by swapping parts until something helps.

  • A.S. Applied Electronics Technology-HVAC

Plus an HVAC diploma, Southern Technical College, 2025: electrical systems, electronics, controls and refrigeration.

  • EPA Section 608 Universal Technician Certification

Federal certification required to handle refrigerant (ESCO Institute).

  • HC/HFO Technician Certification

For hydrocarbon and HFO refrigerants such as R-600a, used in many modern refrigerators and wine coolers (Mainstream Engineering Corporation).

  • Complex refrigeration and electronics diagnostics

About two and a half years of hands-on appliance repair and two and a half years training other technicians, focused on cooling systems, electronics and high-end appliances.

Quick answers

Is it safe to keep using a refrigerator that is not cooling?

Keep the doors closed as much as possible. According to USDA guidance, a closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours, and a full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours (about 24 hours if it is half full). Refrigerated food should stay at 40°F or below.

Should I unplug the refrigerator and plug it back in?

Turning it off for a few minutes can clear a control that is stuck, and a full manual defrost (unplugged for 24 hours with the doors open and towels down) can temporarily restore cooling when the coil is iced over. If cooling returns and then fails again, the defrost system usually needs repair.

How much is a diagnostic visit?

$119 for refrigerators, freezers, wine coolers and built-in refrigeration, credited toward an approved repair of the same appliance. If you decide not to approve the repair, the diagnostic fee is still due. No additional travel fee applies within our St. Petersburg and Tampa service areas.

Do you work on all brands?

We are an independent service company, not an authorized service center. We work on most brands, including Sub-Zero, Viking, Thermador, Miele, Bosch and Fisher & Paykel, and confirm whether we can work on your model when you contact us.

Which areas do you serve?

Clearwater and nearby communities in North Pinellas, the Gulf beaches from Clearwater Beach to Indian Shores, New Port Richey and Holiday. Refrigerator repair is also available in selected areas of St. Petersburg, and refrigerator and high-end appliance repair in South Tampa and Westshore on set days each week. See the service area.
