Ice Maker Not Working? Causes and What to Check

No ice, small or hollow cubes, or a dispenser that will not push ice out. Start with these simple checks.

Refrigerator and freezer diagnostic visit: $119, credited toward an approved repair. Text a photo of the model tag and we reply within 15 minutes during business hours.

Safe checks to do first

Most of these take a minute. Do not remove panels or touch wiring: refrigerators carry line voltage and some use flammable refrigerant.

01

Check that the ice maker is on

Many ice makers have an on/off switch or a wire arm. If the arm is up, or the switch is off, it will not make ice.

02

Check the freezer temperature

Ice makers need the freezer at about 0°F. If the freezer is warm, fix that first (see freezer not freezing).

03

Check the water supply

Make sure the house valve to the refrigerator is open and the line behind the unit is not kinked.

04

Replace an old water filter

A clogged filter slows the water flow, which can cause small cubes or no ice at all.

05

Look for a jam

Clumped or frozen ice in the bin or chute can stop the dispenser. Empty the bin and let it thaw.

What the symptoms usually point to

These are likely causes, not a diagnosis. The same symptom can have different causes, and testing is what tells them apart.

What you seeUsually points to
No ice, freezer is cold, water dispenser also slowWater supply: house valve, kinked line, filter or the water inlet valve.
No ice, water dispenser works fineThe ice maker module, its control or a frozen fill tube.
Small or hollow cubesLow water flow: filter, low pressure or the inlet valve.
Ice made but not dispensedA jammed bin, the auger motor or the dispenser control.
Water leaking near the ice makerA cracked fill tube, a leaking inlet valve or a blocked drain.

Built-in units such as Sub-Zero and Thermador use their own ice maker designs. See high-end appliance repair.

When to call a technician

If the freezer is cold, water reaches the refrigerator and the ice maker is on, but still no ice after 24 hours, a valve, the ice maker or a control has usually failed.

Your technician’s qualifications

Our technician understands both sides of a modern appliance: the cooling or mechanical system and the electronics that control it. Problems are found by testing, not by swapping parts until something helps.

  • A.S. Applied Electronics Technology-HVAC

Plus an HVAC diploma, Southern Technical College, 2025: electrical systems, electronics, controls and refrigeration.

  • EPA Section 608 Universal Technician Certification

Federal certification required to handle refrigerant (ESCO Institute).

  • HC/HFO Technician Certification

For hydrocarbon and HFO refrigerants such as R-600a, used in many modern refrigerators and wine coolers (Mainstream Engineering Corporation).

  • Complex refrigeration and electronics diagnostics

About two and a half years of hands-on appliance repair and two and a half years training other technicians, focused on cooling systems, electronics and high-end appliances.
