Refrigerator Leaking Water? Causes and What to Check

Water on the floor or inside the fresh-food section usually has one of a few simple causes. Here is how to narrow it down.

Refrigerator and freezer diagnostic visit: $119, credited toward an approved repair. Text a photo of the model tag and we reply within 15 minutes during business hours.

Safe checks to do first

Dry the area first, then watch where new water appears. Do not remove panels or touch wiring: refrigerators carry line voltage and some use flammable refrigerant.

01

Find where the water appears

Under the doors, at the back, or inside the fridge: each points to a different source.

02

Check the water filter

A filter that is not fully locked in, or the wrong filter, can leak inside the fridge.

03

Check the supply line behind the unit

Pull the refrigerator out carefully and look at the water line and its connection. Plastic lines can crack with age.

04

Check that the fridge is level

Many refrigerators should tilt slightly back so the doors close and the defrost water drains correctly.

What the symptoms usually point to

These are likely causes, not a diagnosis. The same symptom can have different causes, and testing is what tells them apart.

What you seeUsually points to
Water under the fresh-food crisper drawers or ice on the floor of the fridgeA clogged defrost drain.
Water on the floor at the backThe water supply line, the inlet valve or the drain pan.
Water near the ice maker or dispenserA cracked fill tube, the inlet valve or the dispenser.
Water inside the fridge after the filter was changedA filter not seated correctly or a cracked filter housing.
Puddle under the doors in humid weatherA door gasket that is not sealing, causing extra condensation.

A slow leak can damage flooring and cabinets. If you cannot find the source, turn off the water supply to the refrigerator until it is checked.

When to call a technician

If the leak comes from inside the unit, from the drain or from a valve, it needs a proper repair. We find the source and give you the cost before any work.
